CONTROL UNITS (RODS)
A control unit assembly is a system of two or more control rods (tie rods) placed across an expansion joint and bolted to the back of the mating pipe flanges by means of control rod plates.
They minimize possible damage to the expansion joint caused by excessive weight or motion of the pipeline. Excessive motion could be caused by the failure of an anchor, abnormal temperature fluctuations, pressure surges, or inadequate guiding.

The control rod assemblies are set at the maximum allowable expansion and/or contraction of the joint and will absorb the static pressure thrust developed at the expansion joint. When used in this manner, they are an additional safety factor, minimizing possible failure of the expansion joint and possible damage to the equipment.
Control units will adequately protect the joints, but the user should be sure that the pipe flange strength is sufficient to withstand total force that will be encountered. The term “Control Unit” is synonymous with the term “Tie Rod” as defined by the standards of the Expansion Joint Manufacturer’s Association (EJMA).

Control cables mounted on Models 101-C and 102-C function in the same manner as control rods, but being factory mounted, do not require field installation. Control unit assembly part number example: 12.00”CR(S)-2
